Extreme weather events put disabled lives at risk. We are generally more susceptible to temperature fluctuations, power outages, supply chain issues and more. How can we protect one another?
I evacuated from a wildfire last summer, and 2 summers before that.
I could write an essay about how much of a nightmare it was with me in a health flare and the heat. Logistical nightmare and really not fun.
I've made a vow to actually see flames before I do that to myself again.
We do have 'evacuation centers' to go to but it would mean sharing air with a bunch of people who do not believe in airborne illness. (Like my healthcare facility)
Non disabled people have no idea how hard it is for us to leave our homes, especially in an emergency situation.
I had to evacuate awhile back and thankfully had a soft place to land that wasn’t too far away, still the packing and travel and disruption to my schedule set back my baseline for weeks.
Only going to be more and more heat and severe weather events going forward. I feel such pity for those with conditions made proportionately worse by them.
It’s definitely much harder when living with a condition that worsens in the heat. I really hope we can start building better infrastructure that will protect people and take extreme heat into consideration.
floor fans are great-- they're all i use. they distribute the coolest air which is on the floor. buy the really big ones and they help cool off a room quick. + you can feel like you're in an 80s music video

Make a plan; money helps.
“Money helps”. Honestly truer words never spoken.

Many thanks as always for your helpful insights - many good recommendations here, lots of food for thought and a breath of fresh air! Regards, Bob
Thank you Bob! Stay cool!
Another medication consideration: some meds become less effective/ineffective if they become too warm. Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about this.
Yes excellent point! I had that happen with a medication I accidentally left in the car.
Yeah, I had that happen when traveling by car! I try to remember to put it in the top of the cooler, on a dish towel so it doesn't get too cold.
I now have a med cooler for when I travel just to be extra safe (not that I travel anymore, but if I ever needed to lol)

That’s what I have too and they really help! I don’t have a ton of floor space but I love the ones you can angle upwards at you to cool down.
Thank you so much for writing this! A lot of this stuff's already hit quite hard for me as a disabled person myself.
